Imperial College launches Singapore research hub

Imperial College London has inaugurated its first international research and innovation center in Singapore, marking a significant step in enhancing collaboration between the UK and Singapore. This centre will focus on addressing major global challenges such as pandemic preparedness, climate change, the transition to net zero, and advancements in artificial intelligence.

The Singapore-based centre will facilitate various activities, including entrepreneurship programs, startup accelerators, student placements, and academic programs. It will also work closely with Imperial College Business School and the Singapore Management University on the Singapore Green Finance Centre, supported by the Monetary Authority of Singapore and leading global financial institutions.

One of the first research programs at the new centre, IN-CYPHER, led by Professor Anil Anthony Bharath from Imperial and Professor Liu Yang from NTU Singapore, aims to enhance the security of implantable active devices like pacemakers. The program will address security challenges and protect these devices from accidental or malicious threats.

Imperial staff and PhD students will collaborate with partners from Singapore’s top universities and institutes in cutting-edge laboratories at the centre. This collaboration will foster high-impact research projects to tackle societal challenges and drive economic growth, focusing on societal benefit and commercialisation in Southeast Asia.

The center is part of the Imperial-NTU Singapore strategic partnership and will enable rapid scaling of scientific breakthroughs and technological innovations to address societal challenges and bolster economic prosperity. This initiative exemplifies the fusion of academic and research excellence with private sector innovation, creating a critical partnership for long-term commitment and collaboration.
