ORLEN acquires Austrian fuel retailer, gains 267 service stations

ORLEN has successfully acquired Doppler Energie, gaining full ownership of 267 service stations across Austria. This strategic move expands ORLEN’s network to nearly 3,500 service stations in seven European countries, marking a significant step in the company’s regional growth and commitment to electromobility.

Daniel Obajtek, CEO and president of the Management Board of ORLEN, highlighted the significance of this acquisition. “With this transaction, we’ve become a top-three player in Austria’s fuel market, holding about 10% retail market share. This aligns with our 2030 strategic target of expanding our service station network in the region. We’re now actively seeking further acquisitions to strengthen our Polish brand across Europe,” he said.

In Austria, ORLEN’s network includes 110 electric car charging points at 34 locations under the Turmstrom brand. The acquisition aligns with Austrian consumer preferences, as nearly half of the service stations are self-service. Additionally, 40 locations are equipped with solar PV panels, nearly 100 offer car wash services, half feature convenience stores, and about 80 have a food and beverage concept.

The acquisition also includes Austrocard, a fuel card provider accepted at more than 500 locations in Austria, catering to both private and business customers.

Piotr GuziaÅ‚, the new CEO of the acquired company, emphasised the focus on network expansion and advancing electromobility. “Entering our seventh retail market is not just about expanding our service station segment; it also opens up opportunities for growth in other business areas, including partnerships in green investments and collaborations with local startups,” he explained.

The acquired company, Doppler Energie, will be rebranded as ORLEN Austria and operates under the Turmöl brand. This acquisition also includes a significant portion of the wholesale fuel market, enhancing logistics optimisation and supply stability. ORLEN aims to leverage synergies from its production assets across the region.

The transaction, initially agreed upon with the Doppler Group in July 2023, received European Commission approval in September 2023.

ORLEN’s 2030 strategy aims to expand its retail network to 3,500 sites, with 45% located outside Poland. Currently, ORLEN operates 3,439 service stations, with 1,931 in Poland and 1,508 in international markets, including Germany, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Lithuania, and now Austria. Facilities outside Poland constitute nearly 44% of ORLEN’s total network.
