UPM partners with Brenntag for bio-based MEG distribution in Europe

UPM Biochemicals has teamed up with Brenntag SE to distribute its sustainable bio-monoethylene glycol (BioMEG) UPM BioPura across Europe. The partnership aims to introduce forest-sourced materials into the chemical sector, supporting the industry’s shift towards sustainability. UPM BioPura, produced from certified hardwood around Leuna, Germany, offers a renewable alternative to fossil-based materials.

The collaboration is part of UPM’s broader initiative to transform the chemical industry sustainably. Brenntag’s extensive European distribution network and commitment to enhancing the industry’s sustainability were key factors in forming the partnership. The Leuna biorefinery, where UPM BioPura is produced, is a significant step in UPM’s journey to introduce renewable materials to various industries.

The bio-monoethylene glycol will be manufactured from sustainably sourced, certified hardwood from the forests surrounding Leuna, ensuring that the biomass does not compete with food resources. This initiative provides manufacturers with a practical solution to reduce their carbon footprint and move closer to their net zero targets.

Monoethylene glycol is a versatile chemical with a variety of applications across different industries. Some of the common applications for MEG include antifreeze and coolants, deicing fluids, solvent, heat transfer fluids, and hydraulic and brake fluid.
