SPC to open CNG-refueling outlets

Singapore Petroleum Company (SPC) is likely to be the first petrol company in Singapore to provide compressed natural gas (CNG) that is accessible to the public. Authorities are also working with other petrol companies to encourage them to supply CNG. Senior Parliamentary Secretary Amy Khor from the Environment and Water Resources Ministry revealed this at the launch of the Energy Smart Hotel Label Scheme by the National Environment Agency (NEA.) The country’s first-ever CNG refueling station that is accessible to the public is expected to start running by next January. The new CNG station will be located at Mandai Road, just off the Woodlands Road junction. The NEA has been exploring with petrol stations the possibility of dispensing CNG at service stations. The NEA’s Innovation for Environmental Sustainability Fund has helped to co-fund the start-up costs of the Jurong Island outlet, the only CNG station in Singapore so far. If CNG refueling facilities can be incorporated into existing petrol stations, the cost to car owners of going green could be further lowered. (August 4, 2007)
