PETRONAS Chemicals appoints Mazuin Ismail as new CEO

PETRONAS Chemicals Group Bhd, a subsidiary of Petroliam Nasional Bhd (PETRONAS), has announced the appointment of Mazuin Ismail as its new managing director and chief executive officer, effective January 1, 2024. Mazuin, who currently holds the position of senior vice president (SVP) of corporate strategy at PETRONAS, will take over from Mohd Yusri Mohamed Yusof, the current MD and CEO since January 2022.

In his role as SVP of corporate strategy, Mazuin has been instrumental in shaping PETRONAS’ strategic direction. He has been pivotal in steering the company towards financial stability and sustainability, managing key mergers, acquisitions, and divestments. Notable achievements under his leadership include the acquisition of global renewable energy opportunities and specialty chemicals companies like Perstorp Holding AB and Da Vinci Group.

Mazuin has played a significant role in PETRONAS’ energy transition initiatives. He led the clean energy solutions unit, formed in 2021, which has evolved into Gentari, PETRONAS’ dedicated clean energy arm. His involvement in the advocacy of Malaysia’s National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR), launched in August by the prime minister, underscores his commitment to sustainable energy development.

With more than 30 years of experience at PETRONAS, Mazuin’s career spans project execution and engineering, internal audits, governance, and business development. His previous roles include serving as the SVP of project delivery and technology and vice president of technical global at the national oil and gas company.

In its bourse filing, PETRONAS Chemicals highlighted Mazuin’s contributions and experience, expressing confidence in his ability to lead the company into its next phase of growth and innovation. His appointment is seen as a strategic move to strengthen its petrochemicals position in the chemical industry and align with the broader goals of PETRONAS in the energy sector.
